What is a Root Canal?

A Root Canal is an endodontic treatment used to save a tooth with infected pulp and prevent this infection from spreading. Root canal therapy involves carefully cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth over the course of two visits.

What causes the need for Root Canal Therapy?

A toothache can indicate infection in the soft tissue at the centre of your tooth, known as the dental pulp. A root canal may be required for teeth that have experienced trauma, have deep decay present, cracks or chips, large fillings in place that are beginning to fail or gum disease.

During your initial examination our Dentist will review your x-rays to confirm if the dental pulp has been damaged by the bacteria and will advise if a root canal is your best solution. A treatment plan will then be tailored to your specific needs so the tooth may be saved.

What does our treatment process look like?

Your first visit will involve removing the infected dental pulp and cleaning the canal to remove any residual infection. Once clean, an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic paste is placed into the prepared canal and the tooth is left to heal.

During your second visit we will place a filling into the root canal to seal the tooth from becoming re-infected. The tooth will then be subsequently be restored with an appropriate restoration which can vary from a simple filling to a full coverage crown.

Post Treatment / recovery

Root canal treatment tends to have a bad reputation, however, when in the hands of a skilled professional you should not experience pain during your visit. For your comfort a local anaesthetic is used during the procedure.

As the Anaesthetic wears off and sensation returns after your visit, some tenderness or sensitivity in the area may become evident as the tooth heals. Sensitivity or discomfort can often be relieved with simple paracetamol or ibuprofen.

How much does a root canal treatment cost?

The fee for root canal therapy will vary for each individual and can be confirm once a simple examination and x-ray have taken place. Upon examination and diagnosis our dentist will tailor a comprehensive treatment plan and provide a written estimate of fees.

Root Canals are cost effective with best possible outcome in terms of preserving a healthy, functioning mouth.
