Wisdom teeth are the third and last molars on each side of the upper and lower jaws. They were named “wisdom teeth” because they normally show up between the ages 17-25. A good majority of people will have to deal with their wisdom teeth at some point or another.

Getting your wisdom teeth extracted is a procedure that is necessary when the teeth grow incorrectly, causing problems in the mouth. Even when the solution is very simple, many people choose to delay extraction or not go through with it at all.
What do you risk by not getting these extra teeth removed?
There generally isn’t enough space in the mouth for wisdom teeth to come through. This causes the teeth to grow abnormally and become impacted. A tooth impaction is when the teeth have not ruptured through the gum line either all the way or partially due to your jaw not having sufficient room for your wisdom teeth to grow or move into a position that allows them to be functional teeth.
When this occurs, a number of painful problems can start to present, such as:
- gum disease around the molar teeth
- infections and swelling around the gums of your wisdom teeth
- formation of decay around adjacent functioning teeth
- formation of cysts
- crowding other teeth, causing pain and misalignment of the teeth
Procedure Options
You will require a Consultation and X-rays for your wisdom teeth removal. If the wisdom teeth are impacted and embedded in the bone, we will put an incision into the gums and remove the tooth or teeth in sections in order to minimize the amount of bone being removed.
At Dental 359 you can opt to have your wisdom teeth removed under local anaesthesia in the chair or under a general anaesthetic in a day hospital.
Local Anaesthetic
Before anaesthetic is administered our Dentist will apply a substance to the gums to numb the area. Local anaesthetic will be administered with one or more injections near the site of extraction. You may feel some pressure and movement, however, you shouldn’t experience any pain.
General Anaesthetic
Complex extractions may require general anaesthesia and the assistance of an Oral Maxillo-Facial Surgeon. This takes place at a Hospital with a specialist Anaesthetist closely monitoring your medication, breathing, temperature, fluids and blood pressure. You will experience no pain or discomfort throughout the procedure and local anaesthetic will be used to assist with any post-operative discomfort.

Before your wisdom tooth extraction
Depending on your level of cover you may be eligible for a rebate from your Private Health Insurer. Extractions will fall under General or Major dental cover and an estimate can be requested prior to commencing treatment to confirm any out of pocket expenses that may apply.
The length of treatment will vary depending on the complexity of the case. To ensure your treatment is carried out safely we will always allow plenty of time for your visit.
Depending on the complexity of the wisdom tooth extraction an anaesthetic can be used to ensure you are comfortable throughout treatment.
You will have the option of Local or General anaesthetic.
Local anaesthetic

- Pain
- Trapping food and debris behind the wisdom tooth
- Infection or gum disease (periodontal disease)
- Tooth decay on a partially erupted wisdom tooth
- Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone
- Development of a fluid-filled sac (cyst) around the wisdom tooth
Wisdom teeth do not always require extraction so long as they’re healthy, positioned correctly, and are able to be cleaned as part of regular hygiene practices
Start by scheduling an examination with our Principal or Associate Dentist to determine if the extractions can be completed in our clinic, or if a referral to an Oral Maxillo-Facial Surgeon is required.
Our Dentists will discuss with you the procedure so you can adequately prepare for your wisdom teeth extractions.
You shouldn’t feel any pain during the treatment as the area will be numb.
If you do feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure tell your dentist immediately as a top-up of anaesthetic may be required.
After your wisdom tooth extraction
Recovery time will vary depending on the complexity of the extraction as all individuals respond differently to treatment. What may result in slight swelling and a small bruise to one person may cause dramatic swelling and bruising to another. Following our Dentists post-operative instructions is paramount to ensure a prompt recovery.
- You may be able to manage any pain or discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief such as Panadol or Nurofen.
- In some cases a prescription pain relief will be prescribed by your Dentist or Oral Surgeon.
- Ice packs will be provided following your treatment as this may also relieve pain and will reduce swelling.
For the first 24 hours eat only soft foods such as Yoghurt, Jelly or mashed potatoes and start to eat semisoft foods as and when you can tolerate them.
Avoid any foods that are hard or chewy as they may get stuck in the socket or cause irritation to the extraction site.
Our team at Dental 359 will provide you with a post-operative bag that will include written instructions for at-home oral hygiene, extra soft tooth-brush, arnica cream (to assist with any bruising), sterile gauze, ice packs and headband.
Using tobacco products after your extractions can delay healing and increase the risk of complications significantly. It is important to avoid smoking for a minimum of 72 hours after treatment.
